The Origin of GURUKUL YOGASHALA

The idea of GURUKUL YOGASHALA originates from ancient tradition of "GURUKUL PRATHA" in India. The gurukul system of education has been in existence since ancient times. The Upanishads (1000-800 BCE) mention about the well established gurukulam(plural of GURUKUL) in India in ancient vedic times.

A gurukul or gurukulam in Sanskrit language is a type of education system in which shishya (the 'disciples') used to live with the Gurus (the teachers or the masters), in the same house. The word gurukula is a combination of the Sanskrit words guru ('teacher' or 'master') and kula ('family' or 'home').Therefore, the students of ancient India used to be raised by trained Gurus in different Vidyas (Knowledge) and Kalas (Arts). After a certain age the children had to leave their homes and move to Gurukuls to become learned and mature individuals. Gurukulam can be looked as earliest boarding Schools.

Though, guru-shishya tradition was and is considered one of the most sacred system in Hinduism and possibly appears in other traditions in India, such as Jainism and Buddhism. The term is also used today to refer to residential monasteries or schools operated by modern gurus.
