What Is Yin Yoga?

Yin Yoga is a subtle, slow, meditative, and deeply therapeutic form of yoga. During Yin Yoga, the poses (called Yin postures) are held passively for long periods of time, generally from two to five minutes, and up to ten minutes in advanced practitioners.

Yin Yoga can be traced back to Chinese Medicine and the Taoist ideals of yin and yang, the opposite but equal forces of rest and active, softness and strength, stagnation and flow. The body is believed to have a grid of energy channels called meridians through which the body’s vital force energy known as Qi or Prana flows. When these channels become congested or imbalanced it results in physical and emotional blockages. Yin Yoga asanas work to open, activate and balance the body’s meridian network, clear their pathways and create healthy energy flow throughout.

Yin Yoga vs. Yang Yoga: Understanding the Balance

The other half to Yin Yoga is Yang Yoga.

Yang is the more active, energetic form of yoga such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini and Ashtanga. The aim of Yang is to create muscular strength, cardiovascular stamina, heat and physical endurance. They apply themselves to the superficial layers of the body - to the muscle, developing an energising, uplifting effect. Yang is heat, to movement, to outward expression.

The human body needs a combination of active and relaxing forms of exercise to be well balanced, just like nature does. Yin Yoga is a slow and passive form of practice that incorporates flexibility and relaxation into movement; however, it does not create muscular or cardiovascular strength/fitness like Yang practices (such as Vinyasa Yoga). A healthy lifestyle should include both active (Yang) and passive (Yin) forms of exercise to provide total muscle conditioning and provide adequate time for physical recovery.

At Gurukul Yogashala our Yin Yoga short course trains you not just as a Yin teacher, but also to demonstrate how Yin and Yang relate - you can then show how balanced yoga practice can best support the welfare of your class.

Why Choose Gurukul Yogashala for Yin Yoga Training in Rishikesh?

To decide to study Yin Yoga in Rishikesh is not merely a rational choice. it is a spiritual journey. And out of the many yoga schools in this holy city, Gurukul Yogashala is set among the best for reasons that go far beyond just the course content.

  • Rooted in the Authentic Gurukul Tradition Gurukul Yogashala is named after - and takes inspiration from - the traditional Indian Gurukul Pratha, a sacred and time-tested educational system in Indian culture based on the teachings of the Upanishads and the era of the Vedic period. In the traditional gurukul system, students (shishyas) are raised and schooled along with their teachers (gurus) in the same environment and develop immensely personal, trusting, and respectful relationships with each other, bound by the shared pursuit and dissemination of knowledge. The word 'gurukula' (now written as 'Gurukul') has its roots in Sanskrit: 'guru' (teacher/mentor/guide), and 'kula' (family, home). This is the philosophy of Gurukul Yogashala in practice. Students are not viewed as merely customers, but are received as another member of a yoga family and offered the utmost care, authenticity, and warmth.
  • Experienced, Dedicated Yoga Teachers Our teachers are not teachers per say, but practitioners who deepen students' experience from their own knowledge and areas of expertise. The trainers who teach our Yin Yoga course at Gurukul Yogashala have vast experience in classical Hatha yoga, Yin yoga & meridian theory, pranayama, meditation, yogic philosophies and therapies.
  • Internationally Recognised Certification This 50-Hour Yin Yoga short course is registered with Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP). You will receive a certificate of completion on participation, which is valid worldwide; so it can be used to register as a professional Yin Yoga teacher anywhere on the globe, a manual addition to any existing Health and Fitness qualification, or just to keep for your own records. It is also accredited as continuing education hours for registered yoga teachers (RYTs).
  • Sacred Location in Swarg Ashram, Rishikesh Our school is based in Swarg Ashram, Rishikesh - one of the most spiritually intense locations in this highly revered holy city. The natural surroundings make deep practice effortless: the rushing waters, the mighty Himalayas, the aroma of incense and marigolds, and the centuries of History all create a drive to inner change which is also facilitated by the climate in which Yin Yoga is practiced.
  • Small Batch Sizes for Personalised Attention We have intentionally kept the course batches small so that each student can be given personalized attention. Our teachers carefully guide each student individually by watching, correcting and giving modifications, which is not feasible in larger groups. Numerous students have become lifelong friends here at Gurukul Yogashala.
  • Holistic Living - Accommodation, Sattvic Food & Daily Routine Gurukul Yogashala provides good, clean and comfortable boarding for residential students in a haven of calm within the ashram. The timetable is set up to encourage full involvement with yogic lifestyle - complete with 1st light meditation and pranayama, and evening satsang. Meals are served to sustain healthy bodies and clear minds for intensive Yin practice - sattvic vegetarian, freshly cooked, and balanced. Life at Gurukul Yogashala is carefully constructed with the food, timetable, surroundings and collective energy all incorporated in harmony.
